Wollondilly OWN
Our group was formed in 2002 and by early 2005 had around thirty-six members. Members of the group meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month while the coordination team meets monthly on alternative Wednesdays.
Wollondilly has grown into a cohesive unit with members of the group attending some form of activity nearly every day of the week, most based on a Wellness program and nearly all started by the group, but not exclusively for the group.
Activities include gentle exercise, gym visits, dancing, drumming, aqua aerobics, painting, theatre visits, bus trips and group holidays. Speakers at group meetings are varied and interesting.
Being in a rural area, our needs are different to our city-dweller sisters. Social isolation is common for older women in this area, so our activities are low-cost and designed to bring people together. We offer activities that stimulate our minds as well as our bodies.
Our drumming group (The Heartbeats) is very active and supports nearly all local fund-raising events and celebrations. Each year we used the occasion of International Women's Day as a fundraiser for ourselves. At our 2005 stall our group sold goods and raffle tickets in a quilt made by one of our members. Part of the money raised, $557, will be used to enable some members to attend the State and National Conference in July.
