OWN NSW Theatre Group

You can't beat a WOMAN.
In 1987, one year after the Older Women's Network began, a group of older women travelled to Canberra to highlight the invisibility and concerns of older women. In songs and skits they drew attention to the fact that older women were no longer content to remain invisible and silent about their lives and political concerns. From this small beginning grew the OWN Theatre Group.
Our aims are to present a positive image of ageing, to educate, inform and entertain. The Theatre Group performs material written by members commenting on the lives of older women and exposing society's sacred cows through sugar-coated satire - in cabaret/revue style. It's the sad, the glad, the mad of our lives that we share with our audience.
The OWN Theatre Group, a project of OWN NSW Inc, is based in Sydney and rehearses weekly during the day on Tuesdays at Abraham Mott Hall (provided to us by the City of Sydney) on Argyle St near the Kent St end.
Our programs can be tailored to particular audiences with 20-30 minute performances being the usual length. We've explored surviving the health system; making whoopee; having fun; surviving violence, etc. Our programs have entertained - and educated - conferences, seniors' week functions, community worker training workshops, carers' seminars; International Women's Day events and many others.
Please read our brochure for more details. We have a new program about respect for seniors called "Don't Knock Your Granny" which includes puppets, songs and lots of humour.
