The Organisation

Structure

In July 2001, the Older Women's Network New South Wales was established as the peak body for Older Women's Network groups in NSW.

Its role is to promote the rights, dignity and wellbeing of older women through a range of state-wide activities, to advocate on issues of concern to older women and to support OWN groups in NSW.

OWN NSW is managed by a thirteen-member management team comprised of at least six members from outside the metropolitan area. All members of the Management Team are volunteers.

Coordination of OWN NSW is carried out on a day-to-day basis by a Coordination Group, consisting of three members of the Management Team.

Membership

Membership of OWN NSW is open to any group willing to accept OWN's aims, rules and name. (Individuals are not eligible to be members of the OWN NSW.) Groups pay OWN NSW a small annual membership fee on 1st July each year based on the number of members they have.

Funding

The Older Women's Network receives recurrent funding from the NSW Department of Ageing and Disability Department and Wellness Project funding from the NSW Department of Health.

The NSW Department of Health and the National Women's Health Program provides funding for the Bankstown and Northside Wellness Centres, while Sutherland Wellness Centre and some Northside wellness activities are funded through local Councils.

The City of Sydney provides the Older Women's Network with premises in Millers Point, and permits OWN NSW and OWN Sydney to use the Abraham Mott Community Hall in Millers Point for large meetings and wellness activities free of charge. The Crows Nest Community Centre provides premises used by Northside Older Women's Wellness Centre for wellness activities.

Project funding, which is crucial to OWN's continued viability, comes from a variety of sources including the City of Sydney, Senior's Week Grants, Northern Sydney Health, Willoughby and North Sydney City Councils.
